Remove text from image.
Paint over the words. Get the background back.
Paint over a caption, label, price or sticker, and AI fills the space with background that matches what was around it. No selection tools, no clone stamp, no Photoshop.
No credit card required to start. Sign in with Google.
Only remove text from images you own or may edit. Removing watermarks, photo credits or signatures from someone else’s work, or altering documents and records, is not allowed. Acceptable Use.
To remove text from image files, paint over the words in the tool above and click Remove text: the AI rebuilds the background where you painted and leaves the rest of the picture as it was. Signed-in users get three free removals a day. It works best on flat colour, gradients and soft backgrounds; strong repeating patterns are the hardest case.
What removing text from a picture actually does
Removing text from an image means erasing words that are part of the pixels, such as a caption, a price, a label or a sticker, and filling the gap with background that matches its surroundings. There is no text layer to delete in a JPG or PNG, so the background behind the letters has to be rebuilt. Done by hand, that is clone-stamp work in Photoshop or GIMP. Here an AI model does it: it reads the texture, lighting and grain around each painted stroke and paints the area to match.
Only the area you paint is rebuilt. On screenshots, graphics and flat backgrounds, every pixel outside your brush strokes is the original file; on photos, the rest of the picture is matched so it looks exactly as before.
It is the right tool when the picture should look as if the text was never there. If you want different words in the same place, replace the text instead; if you only need a name or number to be unreadable in a screenshot, blurring it is quicker and free.
Where it works well, and where it struggles
- ·Flat colour, gradients, sky, studio backdrops: the easiest cases. There is no structure a viewer can check, so the rebuilt area simply looks like more of the same.
- ·Fine texture such as paper, wood or concrete: convincing at normal size. Zoom right in and the grain is similar rather than identical.
- ·Strong repeating patterns such as brick, knit, tiles or halftone: the hardest. A break in the rhythm stands out even when the colours match.
- ·Text across a face, a hand or the product itself: the model has to invent what was hidden. Check these results closely, and expect a retry or two.
- ·Text covering most of the picture: the more you paint, the more has to be invented. Remove large blocks in two or three passes rather than all at once.
Three images, cleaned up in one pass
Each started with text that was right once and wrong now, and no source file to fix it in.
Before
AfterAn old promo sticker on a product photo
Last season's product shots all carry a "SALE 30% OFF" burst baked into the image, and the new listing needs the same photos clean. Paint over the burst and its text, and the light grey studio backdrop behind it is rebuilt. Plain backdrops like this are the easiest case: there is nothing for the rebuilt area to contradict.
Before
AfterA meme template with someone else's caption
You found the reaction image you want, but it already has a caption in Impact across the top. Paint over the caption, remove it, and you have a blank template to caption yourself.
Before
AfterA "DRAFT" label on an exported slide
The chart you exported for a newsletter still has a "DRAFT" label in the corner from the review round, and the deck file is on someone else's laptop. Paint over the label and the slide's gradient background fills in behind it, so the chart can go out today.
How to remove words from a picture
- Sign in with Google and upload the image: PNG, JPEG, WebP or a HEIC photo from your phone, up to 10 MB.
- Pick a brush size and paint over every letter you want gone, including a thin margin around the edges. Undo takes back the last stroke.
- Click Remove text. The result usually arrives in about 15 seconds; download it, or start over with the original if a trace is left.
Frequently asked questions
How do I remove text from a picture?+
Upload the picture to the tool at the top of this page, paint over every letter you want gone with a little margin around it, and click Remove text. The AI rebuilds the background where you painted, and you download the result in under a minute. Use the small brush for text near faces or objects and the large one for big headlines. If a faint outline is left, paint a little wider and run it again on the original image.
How can I remove text from a picture for free?+
Sign in with Google and you get three free removals every day, no card needed; a removal that fails doesn't count, and after three it is one credit each. If you'd rather do it by hand at no cost, Photopea in the browser or GIMP on the desktop can do it: select the text and fill it from the surroundings, or paint over it with the healing or clone tool. Manual work is fine on flat backgrounds and slow on photos.
How to remove text from image without removing background?+
Paint only over the letters, not the area around them, and let the tool rebuild just those strokes; the background outside your brush marks is left as it was, and on screenshots and graphics it is the original file pixel for pixel. Removal works because the model fills each painted area to match the pixels right around it, so the tighter the paint, the less it has to invent. Flat colour, gradients, sky and out-of-focus backgrounds come back cleanly. Strong repeating patterns such as brick, knit or tiles are the hardest, because a break in the rhythm is easy to spot.
How to remove text from image on Illustrator?+
Only if the text is vector. If it is live type or outlined shapes, select it with the Selection tool and delete it. If the text is part of a placed photo or a flattened image, Illustrator cannot rebuild the pixels behind it: remove the text in Photoshop or an AI remover like this one first, then place the cleaned image back into your artwork.
How to remove text from image in Photoshop?+
Use the Remove tool: pick it from the toolbar, set the brush a little larger than the letters, and paint over the text; Photoshop fills the area from the surrounding pixels. For a block of text on a plain background, select it with the Lasso tool and use Edit, Content-Aware Fill instead. Both need Photoshop and some cleanup by hand on textured backgrounds.
Can I remove the text and put my own text in the same place?+
Yes, but you don't need two steps. The main editor replaces text directly: you type the words that are there and the words you want, and the new text is drawn in the original style. Remove first only when you want the area empty, for example a blank meme template or a product photo without any label.
Can I use this to remove a watermark?+
Not on someone else's image. Removing watermarks, photographer credits or signatures from work you don't own breaks our Acceptable Use Policy and, in many countries, copyright law. Removing your own branding from your own photos, or text you added yourself, is fine.
Is it better to remove text or blur it?+
Remove it when the picture should look as if the text was never there, as on product photos, slides and memes. Blur or black it out when you're sharing a screenshot and only need a name or number to be unreadable: that's faster, free, happens in your browser, and doesn't depend on how well a background was rebuilt.
“What's the easiest way to remove text from a photo without damaging the background?”
When the label needs new words rather than none: type old and new, and the new text comes out in the original style.
A surface-by-surface guide to what can be filled in convincingly and what a viewer will spot, before you paint anything.
For screenshots you’re sharing: blur, pixelate or black out details in your browser, free, without uploading the image.
